Erik Spoelstra as pitchman? Yes, in Philippines | Video

Erik Spoelstra spent this past season selling his Miami Heat players on sacrifice, teamwork, perseverance. The result was the franchise’s second NBA championship and first for Spoelstra as an NBA head coach.

During his just-completed tour of the Philippines, Spoelstra joined the likes of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh as product pitchman, in this case for Philippines telecommunication giant SMART.

According to the website for the Philippine Star, during his tour of his mother’s homeland, Spoelstra filmed his first commercial, in this case for a company whose chairman also operates the Talk n’ Text Tropang Texters in the Philippine Basketball Association.

“It’s new. I’ve never done a commercial before,” Spoelstra told philstar.com “It’s kind of fun. I’m trying to follow what the director says.”

It gave Spoelstra something else he now has in common with Heat President Pat Riley, a former pitchman himself.

Of the experience, Spoelstra, while seated on the director’s chair at the shoot, said, “I used to sit on that chair directing people. I had a lot of fun.”

Spoelstra’s tour also included several clinics and media sessions, including the question-and-answer session in the video above.
